ISLAMABAD The government has planned a change of faces to defuse the pressure generated from the figure-fudging scandal in Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). As part of changes under consideration, FBR Member Inland Revenue Khawar Khurshid Butt would lose his current position while CBR Chairman Sulman Siddique, rather than receiving any punishment, is likely to be rewarded with the priced slot of Auditor General of Pakistan or he could be made Principal Secretary to the President. Three names are under consideration for the slot of CBR chairman and neither of the candidates is from Customs or Inland Revenue groups. The figure-fudging scandal in FBR came to fore on the suspicion of IMF about the FBR showing the exaggerated amounts to bridge the widening budget deficit but the resignation of State Bank Governor Shahid Hafiz Kardar from his post proved last straw on the camels back as he refused to reduce interest rate and finally the government was left with no choice but to reveal the real figures about the economic health of the country. Sources in the FBR and the Finance Ministry informed that it was FBR that had leaked the real figures to media and confirmed that they had faced a shortfall of Rs38 billion during the fiscal ending on June 30 last and that the 'mistake was caused due to inclusion of refund in Sales Tax head in the overall figures. On June 30, FRB had arranged a press conference where Sulman Siddique had claimed that they had collected Rs1,588 billion revenue against the target of Rs1,590, asserting that the collected amount would soar further. A source in FBR confirming the scandal admitted that they had committed blunder and put the whole blame on Member Inland Revenue who is going to retire shortly. Sources further informed that CBR Chairman Sulman Siddique is considered a strong contender for the slot of Auditor General of Pakistan which is lying vacant while the slot of Principal Secretary to President would also be vacated shortly. The source said that the main contenders for the slot of FBR chairman are Hassan Nawaz Tarar, Secretary Commerce Zafar Mahmood and Secretary Statistics Division Asif Bajwa. As the DMG group officers were dominating the top bureaucratic slots in the country so the future FBR chairman would likely from the same group.
