Rawalpindi - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman of Union Council (UC) 9 Chirah Haji Raja Zulqarnain Haider has distributed a total of 40 brand new CD-70 motorcycles among the villagers to gain votes for his party’s candidate Raja Khurram Shehzad Nawaz, who is contesting general elections from NA-52 (Islamabad).

The motorcycles were gifted by the chairman through balloting during a mammoth public gathering he arranged on Sunday night in Chirah Village in connection with election campaign of Raja Khurram Shehzad Nawaz.

The rival candidates of Raja Khurram Shehzad Nawaz raised hue and cry over the foul play by the UC chairman of PTI and threatened to lodge complaints with Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to denotify the chairman as well as to punish the candidate for bribing people for the vote.

According to a local politician, Haji Raja Zulqarnain Haider had purchased a total of 100 motorcycles worth Rs 4.5 million to gift to the area residents to canvass them to stamp on the bat on July 25, the polling day.

Out of 100, the chairman had given away 40 motorcycles valuing Rs 1.8 million to villagers while the rest would be gifted to the voters during public rallies on Monday night, he said.

According to details, PTI Chairman UC-9 Chirah Haji Raja Zulqarnain Haider along with other local politicians of the area had arranged a public rally in connection with electioneering of Raja Khurram Shehzad Nawaz, who is contesting general elections from NA-52 and his opponent Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry of PML-N. After the address of the party candidate with the participants of the rally, Haji Raja Zulqarnain Haider conducted a balloting at the venue during which some 600 villagers had applied for by boxing the photocopies of their computerized national identity cards (CNICs). During balloting, the chairman gifted 40 motorcycles among the villagers by taking oath from them to vote for PTI candidate from NA-52 Raja Khurram Shehzad Nawaz on July 25, 2018. The chairman also told the motorcycle winners to convince their family members to vote for the candidate of PTI.

A jubilant winner said that he had gone to the venue only to attend the rally and had no idea he would leave with a motorcycle.

He assured that he and his family members would definitely vote for the PTI candidate.

“Earlier I used to go to my work on a bicycle but now I will travel on the motorcycle gifted by the UC chairman. Thank you Haji Raja Zulqarnain Haider,” exclaimed another winner.

A local politician told The Nation that Zulqarnain Haider is a rich politician who had bought 100 brand new motorcycles at a price of Rs 4.5 million to distribute among the villagers to gain support for Raja Khurram Shehzad Nawaz, the PTI candidate.

“I had not gifted motorcycles to villagers; I’m a philanthropist and social worker. Sardar Sadaqat had given motorcycles to people in the parking of his market in Chirah,” said UC-9 Chairman Haji Raja Zulqarnain Haider, when contacted.

Defending himself, he said he had not even organized the public gathering of PTI candidate as Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has banned the public elected representatives of local bodies to support their party candidates.

“People are lying that I distributed motorcycles among villagers,” he said. He added, “Yes, I am planning to distribute laptops in November among the students who excelled in Secondary School Certificate (SSC) conducted by Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education,”

Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, the PML-N candidate from NA-52, was not available for his comments.
