While condemning the Lahore suicide blast, chief of the MQM, Mr Altaf Hussain called for a general strike in Pakistan on Saturday and announced a day of mourning in Karachi to condemn the killing of Mufti Sarfraz Naeemi. He asked all the people of Pakistan to close their shops and businesses and stay home on Saturday. He also asked other political leaders in Pakistan to observe a day of mourning in Pakistan on Saturday. Closing down businesses, not going for work and closing government institutions in Pakistan to mourn the death of a great person murdered by the Taliban, will only give the Taliban what they want; the destruction of Pakistan. If we start mourning the deaths all the people killed by the Taliban, we would only end up hurting our economy more. That is exactly what the militants want. -SHAHRYAR KHAN BASEER, Peshawar, via e-mail, June 13.
