Shakil wins cycling event as PbOA celebrates Olympic Day

LAHORE The Punjab Olympics Association celebrated the Olympic Day on behalf of the Pakistan Olympics Association and organised activities in 23 disciplines. The POA used to mark the day by holding Olympics Day run but this year lack of funds forced it to approach its provincial body to make the arrangements. The other reason maybe the arrival of the Queens Baton, the torch of the Commonwealth Games, that landed in the city in the evening and the POA was busy in its welcome. However, the PbOA started the day with a cycling event starting from the Punjab Stadium, and Muhammad Shakil of SSGC and Ashfaq Ahmed of Lahore won the races on racing and ordinary bike respectively. This Olympic Day Tour-de-Lahore Cycle Races were organized by the Punjab Cycling Association under the auspices of the PbOA. The purpose behind the Olympic Day is to broaden the scope of sporting activities to make the founding of Olympic Movement. Muhammad Shakil of SSGC on racing bike and Muhammad Ashfaq of Lahore ordinary bike won the tour race covering the distance of 30 kms in 37 minutes 46 seconds. The start of this event was given by Muhammad Jamil, former international cyclist. About 60 cyclists in different categories took part in this race. According to the programme, the race started at 06.15 am from Punjab Stadium, Ferozepur Road, Lahore and Proceed to Ferozepur Road- Kalma Chwk- Ittefaq Bridge- Qainchi toward Walton Road- Girja Chowk- Upper Mall Road- Fortress Stadium- Canal toward FC college -Ferozepur Road and will terminate at the originating point i.e Punjab Stadium Lahore. The results: On Racing Bike: Muhammad Shakil, SSGC 37M.46.S.00, Muhammad Babar, Zahid Iqbal Lahore. On ordinary cycle: Muhammad Ashfaq, Lahore 37M.46.S.00, Faryad Hussain, Lahore, Muhammad Shafiq Kasure. The organizing secretary of the race was Sardar Nazakat Ali, Punjab coach and chief guest of the closing ceremony was Waqar Ali, secretary General Punjab Cycling Association, who gave away trophies to the winners. Similarly, Pakistan Baseball Association held a match at Multan and Multan Tigers were the winners. Multan Tigers beat Mango City Baseball team in the Olympic Day match organised by the Multan Baseball Association in the directions of the Pakistan Baseball Federation after instructions of the Punjab Olympics Association in collaboration with the Pakistan Olympics Association. Multan Tigers won over MCBT by three scores. Chaudhary Mohammad Saddique, district Sports Officer Multan was the chief guest and gave the winners trophy to Multan Tigers Abdul Haye. Multan Tiger made 13 scores in total while the losing team could make 10 and lost the match by three scores. The Punjab Swimming Association held the Punjab Age Group activity including swimmers of the age of Under-8, 10, 12, 14,16 & (Open) at FC College University Pool. PSA president Zoraiz Lashari was the chief guest and gave the prizes to the winners. The volleyball event was played at Mozang High School, Mozang in which Tiger Club beat Mozang Club 3-0 with a score of 25-23, 25-20, 25-15. Ch Mohammad Bashir was the chief guest. The New Khan Club, Lawrence Road arranged the badminton events and Amjad Imtiaz won the singles title beating Ahsan Iqbal 21-18, 21-16. in doubles Aziz and Ahmed beat Hamza and Shahzad 21-14, 21-16. secretary Punjab badminton Tayyab Sohail was the chief guest. The Punjab Boxing Association organised the events at Islamia College Civil Lines and Noman Saleem But, Mohammad Azam, Michael, Zubair, Shakeel, Farkan and Zulqarnain were the winners. Islamia College Civil Lines principal was the chief guest. Muhammad Bashir Butt, Secretary General Punjab Karate Association organized the karate events and Shamin Hashami, Secretary General Pakistan karate was the Chief Guest of the opening ceremony while Umair Khan President was the chief guest at closing ceremony and gave away prizes to the winners. In 55 kgs Shabir won gold, Mubashir silver and Rehman bronze. Simiolarly the three position winners in other weight categories were: 50 kgs Noman, Waqas, Sameer, 45 kgs Ali Mehmood, Rahim-Ullah, Tayyab. 40 kgs Dildar, Zia-ul-Rehman, Usama. 35 kgs Taj-Din, Savil Faiz, Ahsan Raza. Open Weight Mirza Rehan, Awais Taj, Farhan Ullah. Apart from these events, basketball, football, gymnastic, handball, hockey, judo, lawn tennis, netball, squash, table tennis, taekwondo, wrestling, rugby, weightlifting, canoeing, rowing and wushu events were also held.
