LAHORE - The police have failed to arrest the robbers involved in the murder of a local news channel reporter. Police said deceased Tariq Javed Malik of Layyah was taking a stroll along with his friend in a street near his rented place in Z-Block of Defence Housing Authority on late Sunday when two armed motorcyclists stopped him and tried to snatch his cell phone. On resistance, one of the robbers opened fire and injured him critically. He was rushed to the National Defence Hospital but to no avail as he had died on the way. His funeral was offered at Layyah on Monday. Police achieved no success in tracing the suspects from the CCTV cameras installed in Z-Block, on near-by Ghazi Road and other blocks of DHA. Police teams constituted to probe the killing, collected all footages of CCTVs installed at DHA and kept examining the identity of suspects and their motorcycle. The CIA police also took some suspected people into custody for interrogation with no positive outcome so far. Police inquiries revealed that two robbers had stopped and asked Tariq's friend to hand over his cell phone. Tariq, who was unmarried, resisted the attempt and tried to overpower one of the robbers armed with knife as a result of which overpowered robber injured the victim with a knife strike while the other fired bullets at him. The outlaws escaped empty-handed. The victim had three wounds of stab and gunfire. Three separate teams of the Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA), the investigation as well as operation wings of Defence police, had been constituted led by the DIG (Investigation) to probe the murder. Earlier, the Punjab IGP, the CCPO and other senior police officers rushed to National Hospital Defence in early hours of Monday and passed necessary directions to the subordinates for the arrest of killers. Later, Governor Salman Taseer, taking strict notice of the incident, had ordered inquiry into the incident. Politicians, legislators and journalist bodies condemned the brutal murder of Tariq Malik and expressed sympathy with the bereaved family. They also demanded immediate arrest of the killers. The prominent among them were Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Imran Khan. Punjab Union of Journalists has announced to hold a rally from 3-Dial Singh Mansion to Governor's House to protest the murder.
