Drug addiction

The menace of drug-addiction is increasing in our society with every passing day. The tragic thing about the situation has been that youths of the country have been falling prey to this scourge for quite some time. There are more than five million confirmed drug- addicts in Pakistan; out of which more than 60% belong to the age group of 15 to 40 years. The use of heroin, opium, chars, etc has become common in the above-mentioned age group. According to a survey, there are more than 1, 00,000 female drug- addicts in the country between the age of 20 to 45 years and majority of them belong to the educated, the upper middle and the rich class living in posh areas of Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad etc. This menace is really eating away youths of our society. So, there is a greater need to educate them regarding the adverse effects of drug-addiction on their lives and personalities. The teachers of schools and colleges must show their responsibilities by informing and guiding the students about the overall impact carried by the menace. All the drug-dens working in the country should be sealed forthwith by the government. Both the Excise and Taxation and the Police departments working in each of the four provinces can play an important role in this regard. It has often been seen that the officials of both these departments have been in collusion with such drug dealers in running their business. In return, the officials of these departments charge fixed "monthly" from them. The government should strive for removing all those causes due to which our youths easily indulge themselves into such dangerous and unhealthy activity of use of drugs. -ABDUL SAMAD SAMO, Karachi.
