LAHORE – Dozens of filtration plants installed by the Water and Sanitation Agency in order to provide clean drinking water for general public at various residential and commercial areas are soon going to end up dry, due to lethargy of Wasa authorities, TheNation has learnt.
Moreover, some of these plants are still waiting to be put in the already erected structures built by Wasa authorities, with the financial support of provincial and federal governments as well as international aid agencies to supply clean and germs free drinking water to the citizens.
Some areas in Shalimar Town, Ravi Town, Data Ganj Buksh Town, Samanabad Town and Iqbal Town, are still waiting for the installation of filtration plants, said the insiders at Wasa. They added that the plants, already functioning in some localities were also decaying rapidly, as they have rarely been repaired. It so seems that the government has no mechanism to monitor the performance of the department and maintenance of these filtration plants, and the millions of rupees spent on the project have only gone waste. Sources told TheNation that officials in the concerned department had earned millions of rupees in the name of the project due to the absence of a monitoring mechanism.
An insider in Wasa informed this scribe that Wasa authorities had collected huge funds from the secretaries and administrators of the union councils, promising them that the donations would be spent to facilitate the people.
He further said that the money was deposited into the account of Managing Director Wasa and he was accountable for the expense.
When contacted, the Managing Director Wasa and Director General LDA were not available for comment.
