Cricket woes

FEDERAL Sports Minister Pir Aftab Shah has informed the President that he is not happy with the way PCB Chief Ijaz Butt has been running the board. Among others, he has pointed out that Mr Butt knows little how the cricket affairs at the international level are managed. This looks like the case. Given the way the ICC has been dealing with the PCB depriving Pakistan of its rights to host matches of the World Cup and the Champions Trophy, one cannot help but feel that the board is in need of a new chief who could present Pakistan's case in a convincing way. Mr Butt might have been a good cricketer but doesn't seem capable of restoring the game to its rightful status. Besides, the board has failed miserably in throwing up new talent. What is more, it has become a multi-billion rupee business these days and too much is involved when the game is played at the international level. Concurrently, a culture of ad hocism, and the practice of appointing cronies to the top slot again and again explains the pitiful state of affairs. The board needs a professional, preferably a dynamic man with proven administrative skills, who knows how to steer Pakistani cricket deftly out of the mess.
