LAHORE-Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the govt has launched the counter-insurgency military drive in Malakand division and Swat after taking stock of the situation and measuring all pros and cons of this decision. He was talking to media men after inaugural ceremony of Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Medical and Dental College at Shaikh Zayed Hospital on Saturday. Governor Punjab Salman Taseer, Federal Minister Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, Secretary Cabinet Zafar Mahmood, Senior Adviser to Chief Minister Punjab Zulfiqar Khosa and MNA Hamza Shahbaz were also present on the occasion. Regarding IDPs, he said that not only the govt but also the entire nation and the world community have owned IDPs and reiterated that the govt was determined to do every thing for them. To a question about IDPs spreading out to various areas of the country, he said they are Pakistanis, our brethren and honorable guests, and they may go anywhere in the country. 'They will be provided all possible help and assistance. He said that an appeal has been made to the world community seeking help for the distressed people and the govt was also providing relief and succour to the victims from it own resources. 'Restricting the affectees to the camps and their registration was aimed at ensuring relief and assistance to them, the PM maintained. Gilani said that the use of drone attacks was counter-productive and this fact has been endorsed by the entire world that these attacks help extremists in getting united. Had these attacks been helpful in eliminating the terrorists, we would also have supported it, he added. He said that the militants would be wiped out as a result of the military drive and action would continue against all those, who challenge the writ of the govt. When asked as to who was funding the militants, he said that poppy growing mafia was at their back. 'Wait for the solid proofs in this regard. We will share it with the nation. He said that Taliban cannot make the nation hostage and the drive against them would be successful. To a question, Gilani said the Swat drive was planned best to our abilities and action was started keeping in view all the aspects. 'It is being carried out with precision by the military in coherence with the civilian govt with the full backing of the nation and it would succeed, he added. When asked if the govt was planning to launch Swat like drive in some other areas, he said maintenance of law and order is basic duty of provincial govt and if govts writ is challenged in any area then the concerned provincial govt could call military for its assistance. To a question about the remarks of some leaders regarding APC, he saidwe are thankful to political leaders for their participation in the APC and cooperation. They may have some reservations, but the resolution in the APC was adopted unanimously and we have to go by it. Regarding Fridays bomb blast in Peshawar, he said, such barbaric acts were expected as an aftermath or result of the action against the militants. He said he had directed Chief Ministers of all the provinces to tighten security as a precautionary measure. Earlier, addressing the inaugural ceremony of Sheikh Zayed Medical College, Prime Miniser Gilani announced to provide free dialysis facility in the hospital. He also announced a grant of Rs 300 million for the college.
