ISLAMABAD - Acting Chairman Senate Mir Jan Mohammad Jamali has accepted the resignation of Wasim Sajjad as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate that was submitted with the Chairman Senate office after the PML-Q joined the federal cabinet, sources informed The Nation on Monday. However, no official word came from the Senate Secretariat about the appointment of the new Leader of the Opposition. Presently, Chairman Senate Farooq H. Naek is on his official visit to Poland and Deputy Chairman Senate Jan Jamali is serving as Acting Chairman of the Upper House of the Parliament. Wasim Sajjad had resigned as Leader of the Opposition after his party joined the PPP-led coalition government on May 2. Ishaq Dar of PML-N and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri of JUI-F are the contenders for this slot. The matter was delayed after the visit of Senate Chairmanf foreign visit and due to some legal complexities arising out of an application submitted in the Senate bearing signatures of 24 Senators n support of Ishaq Dar. The Senate Secretariat sources said that the matter of appointment of Leader of the Opposition would be solved after the return of the Chairman Senate. However, there is a general impression in the Senate that the government is supporting the JUI-F candidate for this slot and because of the reason, the Chairman Senate has not notified Ishaq Dar as Leader of the Opposition till yet.
