SIALKOT

The resignation of Pasrur-based Federal Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid has brought mixed reaction from the people of his native city.

PML-N leaders and workers were disappointed with his resignation while the PTI and PAT workers warmly welcomed the move.

Zahid Hamid’s son Ali Zahid talking to newsmen at his house said, “We fully respect the country’s judiciary and courts’ orders, due to which my father has sent his resignation to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after the court’s verdict against him.”

Zahid Hamid had been the federal minister for law in the Musharraf era when General (r) Pervaiz Musharraf had imposed emergency in the country on November 2007.

It was learnt that the PM Nawaz Sharif cabinet’s federal minister for science and technology consulted and discussed in details the whole persisting scenario  with his family including his brother Shahid Hamid (former Governor of the Punjab) after the SC verdict against him and then resigned.

Zahid Hamid had resigned from PML-Q before the 2008 general elections and joined the PML-N. He hails from a well-established political family. Originally from Pasrur in Sialkot district, this is his third consecutive term in the National Assembly. Between 2002 and 2007, he won the general elections on a PML-Q ticket. He held the portfolio of law until 2007 and was actively involved in advising the military ruler.

According to one of his former cabinet colleagues, Zahid Hamid was among the erstwhile generals’ `most trusted aides`. His only electoral defeat came in his debut, when he was campaigning on a PPPP-ticket in 1997. The son of retired Brig Hamid Khan is two-time MNA with the PPP in 1977 and in 1985 on a nonparty basis.

He is quite popular among the workers. `Hard-working`, `straight as an arrow`, and `not looking for extra perks and privileges` were some of the adjectives his former colleagues used to describe him. A former cabinet member said that it was his loyalty that endeared him to both General Pervaiz Musharraf as well as the Sharif brothers.
