GILGIT: Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan has taken oath as the fifth governor of Gilgit-Baltistan. Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif visited Gilgit to attend the Oath taking ceremony. Mir has close relations with PM family.
The oath was administered by Dr Rana Shamim. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed, legislative members of the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly, Chief Minister Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman and notables of the area.
Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan was born in 31 December 1945 and is a qualified person who uses the title of Mir on his official documents since he belongs to family of Mirs who were the rulers of Gilgit state before it became a part of Pakistan.
The last Mir of Hunza was Mir Muhammad Jamal Khan but the title ‘Mir’ is used by 69-year-old Ghazanfar Ali Khan.
Ghazanfar Ali Khan served as the first chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, at the time when General Pervez Musharraf was president. His native town is Karimabad, the traditional seat of the Mirs of Hunza. Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan contested the elections several times from his hometown of Karimabad, Hunza and got selected 5 times as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.
Hunza was a princely state during the rule of the British from 1892 to 1947. After Partition, it joined Pakistan and remained a princely state within Pakistan till 1974 when it was abolished. The geographical area of Hunza now is Aliabad Tehsil in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Hunza-Nagar district.
