About four years ago, the newly established University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore 'concocted' a 5-Year DVM degree course under the name of a composite degree by adding one year to the 4-year degree of DVM. This was done, ostensibly to include some animal husbandry course in the new degree. However, as a consequence, the 4-year degree programme of BSc (Hons) Animal Husbandry was abolished in the University of Agriculture Faisalabad at the behest of the then Chancellor of the Universities. This was a retrogressive step as the four-decade-old degree of BSc (Hons) Animal Husbandry was scuttled, thus, paralyzing the entire Faculty of Animal Husbandry of University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Since then a lot of water has flown under the bridges and these universities have now instituted a number of basic degree programs of 4 years in the field of Dairy Science and Technology, Poultry Science and Fisheries. So the rationale of injecting one year of Animal Husbandry courses in the erstwhile 4-year degree course of DVM has disappeared. It would be in fitness of things that both UVAS and UAF should revive the 4-year DVM degree as well as the 4-year BSc (Hons) Animal Husbandry degree. -DR M.
