Pakistan being an ally against war on terror is sacrificing to an extent, which is not visible to the Western world. The sacrifices its armed forces and people are making are unprecedented. It is not a war where the enemy is identified and a planning is done to eliminate it. It is a war where perceptions need to be cleared. Public support is a must. As there is no timeframe there are always pressures from within and outside. But it is very disappointing for all of us when despite all our suffering and sacrifice of lives and property, economic setbacks leading to further problems US invariably threatens that Pakistan would bear the consequences of any terror attack occurring on the US mainland. Why this constant sabre-rattling? The threatening messages may also disappoint the people at large leading to trust deficit and mutual hostility. The government needs people to stand by its side, because no government can succeed without the support of the people and no Army can succeed without the support of its government and people. It is again very much important to be aware of the consequences of such threats as they can fuel resentment provoking people publicly to rise against the US. It is time the US understood the limitations and problems faced by Pakistan due to its collaboration in war against terrorism. Dignity and honor is above all. Moral support, goodwill and inner sincerity is more important than financial aid. On the other hand, US change of heart and realization of the dilemma faced by Pakistan would improve the bilateral relations. ANWAR PARVEEN, Islamabad, October 23.
