LAHORE - The controversy created by the celebration of two Eids in the country has also triggered debates at the level of Ulema and public in the City. At public level, majority has not liked the way the issue has been stretched where it appears more a personal fight of two set of people more than a national or religious one calling for sanity and patience to sort it out. A teacher commenting on the arguments between the ANP leaders and the members of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee says, when two Eids in Pakistan have confused the people, assertion of personal stand on the matter is furthering this confusion which must not happen in a matter which relates to the religion. He says the issue of sighting of Eid moon can be readily settled down through negotiations and accepting the views that meet the requirement of Shariah. Mr Ishaq, a banker says this is purely a religious matter which must not be politicised rather be settled through consensus of people of all schools of thought and representative Ulema of all the districts of the country. Other people were not at all in favour of exploiting this issue for personal benefits but that it must be settled down with a view of creating harmony and promoting brotherhood in our society. They said at present when the nation was already divided on many other matters, the moon sighting issue must not be magnified disproportionately to add to them another. They have also disliked the language used by the parties on the issue. On the Ulema side, the reaction to the issue is mixed. The Jamiat Ulema Pakistan (JUP) standing by the side of Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has called for removing the ANP ministers including Bashir Ahmad Bilour, Mian Iftikhar Hussain and others. Maulana Abdul Rahman Noorani of the JUP on Wednesday stated that the ANP accepted Ruet-e-Hilal Committee on sighting of moon every month except that of Shawal and it was after thrusting its decision this moon on everyone. He said the government must avoid making its Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee a laughing stock in the world by accepting what ANP alleging and it should take to task all those who defy its decision of the Committee on Moon. Including Saudi Arabia and Iran, nowhere in the decision taken by the Central government on moon is repelled, he said, adding the government must also make all to accept the Committee decision. On the other hand Jamiat Ahle Hadith (JAH) has called for immediate suspension of the Reut-e-Hilal Committee and removal of Mufti Munibur Rahman as its chairman. Nazime Aala of JAH, Maulana Ibtisam Elahi Zaheer addressing a congregation at Minar-e-Pakistan said Mufti Munibur Rehman was totally misfit to perform the job and in his place some other should be appointed. He said his party did not support the ANP, but the stand taken by this party on the issue was justified and the issue of sighting of moon needed to be addressed once and for all.
