I am sure the present Deputy Chairman Planning Commission of Pakistan, Dr Nadeem ul Haq, himself a PhD in economics, would want to make available adequate funds for higher education institutions like universities and colleges. No country in the world can survive without specialists in science, technology and liberal arts like economics. If anything has provided us with a deterrence in our defense it has been none other than the acquisition of nuclear technology that was made possible by accomplishments of a few dedicated scientists and engineers. I am not trying to belittle the role of our Armed Forces but the fact remains that without developing our indigenous defense technology, we would be reliant forever on foreign support which, as we all know, comes with a lot of strings attached. Even if we have to cut the budgetary allocations for unnecessary expenditure in administration in Presidency, top civil and uniformed bureaucracy and useless foreign tours allocation, we must do that so that funds could be diverted to running of universities and colleges. It must be kept in mind that all developed countries of the world developed through investing in their human resources. Those who did not invest in education and health of their people have remained underdevelopedlike us. We have no choice but to invest in education. -MALIK TARIQ ALI, Lahore, September 21.
