LAHORE Opposition Leader Punjab Assembly Ch Zaheer-ud-Din Khan has alleged that the plunder and pillage of Punjab at the hands of the current rulers is continuing unabated. Ch Zaheer cited the recently reported scandal of Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, and maintained that it was another case of Punjab rulers open corruption where construction contract in gross violation of merit since money was dished out to a company enjoying close links with the Chief Ministers son. Ch Zaheer also claimed that an amount of Rs 500million was illegally paid to the said company as advance much before the construction of the hospital began along with a sudden enhancement of the estimated project cost from Rs 3billion to Rs 4billion evidently to gratify CMs son. Regarding the stopping of construction of the RIC by a sensitive organisation, he blamed the Punjab government for starting work on the project in an uncanny haste in the absence of proper feasibility plan and survey. Talking to party workers here on Thursday, Ch Zaheer said there were already plenty of institutes in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, there was no need for any such institute there. He also expressed his amazement at the selection of the site, which was not appropriate for a public health institute. He was of the view that establishments like Wazirabad Institute of Cardiology was being delayed deliberately since it was considered to be previous govts project. The demolition and shifting of the RIC to another place will cost Rs 1.5bn to the public exchequer, he maintained. CH AAMER WAQAS September 23, 2010
