LAHORE - Police investigators have almost shelved investigations to probe into the alleged plot to assassinate the top judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC), as seven out of eight suspects detained some 9 days back, have been set free late on Wednesday night. Police sources revealed that the investigators failed to collect any solid clue to ascertain the involvement of the arrested suspects in the alleged murder plot of LHC Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif. Sources said that the investigators grilled the arrested suspects including Babar Chaudhry, Khawaja Farooq, Iqbal Mir, Rana Pumi, Mian Kashif, Khurram Gujjar, Master Riaz and Nadeem Chohan as their names were mentioned in the controversial report as hired assassins and facilitators. They (suspects) remained in police custody for more than a week. The investigators could not establish their link with the plot. All the suspects except Khurram Gujjar have been set free, a senior official of the Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA) police confirmed, when contacted. He further said that Khurram Gujjar has not been released, as he was wanted to the police in other cases. Sources further said that other accused mentioned in the report including Babar Sindhu and Malik Ehsan are already out of country. So, we have reached a dead end, the police source added. On the other hand, DG FIA Zafar Qureshi have again begun investigations to crosscheck the credentials of the report after the federal government directed him to send his report about the veracity of the alleged Special Branch report. The DG FIA have so far recorded the statement of no less than 18 officials of the Special Branch in order to ascertain the credibility of the report and the involvement of the SB officials. The DG FIA will soon forward his detailed report to the federal government in this regard, sources maintained. Reportedly, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had directed the Inspector General of Police Punjab and Chief Secretary to investigate the matter. However, the federal government asked the DG FIA to probe into issue. Earlier, the federal and provincial investigation agencies came up with conflicting reports as the Punjab police in its report had revealed that Col (r) Ahsanur Rehman prepared the confidential report while the FIA termed the report as bogus. The Capital City Police Officer (CPPO) Aslam Tareen said that three suspects including Asif Cheema, Malik Ahsan and Babar Sindhu are still absconding and the police are conducting raids to nab them. The CCPO confirmed that the former Chief of Special Branch Col (r) Ahsan-ur-Rahman confessed to investigators that he had prepared the report. Yes, in his written statement he has admitted, Aslam Tareen added. The SB report alleged the involvement of some top figures in the federal government to assassinate the CJ LHC, bringing the federal and provincial government at loggerheads.
