SBP searches swimming venues after leasing out its own facility

LAHORE The Sports Board Punjab is holding the Inter Divisional U-16 (Boys) Age Group Swimming Championship from September 28 to 29 at the Model Town Swimming Pool, Lahore. The event is being held at a hired swimming pool in Model Town because its own facility at the Iqbal Park Sports Complex has been leased out for commercial use and its outer space is being used as a parking lot. The facility has not seen any proper competition organised by the SBP since long and instead it hosts events at pools that do not fall in its domain like FC College, Model Town, Aitchison College. Even the international standard swimming pool under construction near the Gaddafi Stadium is still in limbo. An official of the sports board said that traffic congestion in the area made access to the venue a problem for swimmers and officials. He said that they were planning to make the facility useful in the coming season. The age groups in which competitions will be held includes the U-8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. The boys who wants to take part in this championship will report at pool at 2 pm for warm up, while exhibition competitions will start at 2.30 pm on September 28. The winners will be awarded cash awards, medals and team trophies. The prize in U-16 (boys) will be Rs 3000, second prize is Rs 2000 and third is Rs 1000. Similarly, the winners of the three positions in under-18, 10, 12, 14 category will be given Rs 1000, Rs 700 and Rs 500 each along with medals. National coach Hafeez Bhatti is the organising secretary of the competitions.
