KARACHI – A 200-ft wide breach in Hub Canal’s channel 23 led to the suspension of water supply to many Karachi neighbourhoods on Sunday. Sources in the Water & Power Development Authority said that due to the void, nearly 100 million gallons of water would not be supplied to the city for three days. The situation has also resulted in inundation of Madinat-ul-Hikmat and Bhuray Khan Goth. Water board Chief Engineer Iftikhar Ahmed told a private television channel that teams had been sent to the site to fill the void.Commissioner Roshan Ali Shaikh meanwhile said that all available resources including heavy machinery were being used to repair the breach that would be done very soon.According to a statement, the commissioner assured that water supply to the city would be restored within short time. “The supply of water can be partly affected for next two or three days.”Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan directed the commissioner to get the breach mended on emergency basis. It may be mentioned here that Hub Canal is the second largest source of water for the city after Keenjhar Lake.
