LAHORE - The Punjab police have been considering to change the pattern of police uniform, officials said Wednesday.

The proposal was discussed at length in a high-level meeting held under the chairmanship of Punjab Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera. “In the meeting, the PPO (provincial police officer) was told that the new pattern of police uniform will be produced within two weeks for approval,” a police spokesperson said.

In case the decision to change the uniform is finally approved, probably next month, it would mean the 178,000 strong force will replace the decades-old dress with a new pattern.

The department has also decided that each district will be provided staff according to the ratio of population and the crimes rate. The district police officers have already been asked to complete necessary work to maintain a balance in the police strength in their respective areas.

Mushtaq Sukhera directed the additional-IG of training to get help from the Pakistan Army for the advance training of some 4000 personnel who were inducted in the PHP for security duties at Riverine crossings and border posts. The police chief also directed the officers to finalise the training plan and arrangements for those 5000 officials, who will be recruited for Special Protection Unit in the Punjab police very shortly.

According to officials, the police department in future would ensure the purchase of equipment like APCs, Water Cannons and helicopter after the approval of the experts of notified technical committees.

Similarly, the department will make computerisation and preparation of inventory of all purchases including weapons, equipments, ammunition, vehicles, and uniforms.

Also, in order to evaluate the performance of the newly-appointed investigation officers for Homicide units across Punjab, a monthly meeting will be held in the central police office. The police chief was informed that the complaint handling centers (CHC) established in 10 police stations of Lahore are being monitored from the central police office.

The meeting also decided to move a summery to the government regarding raise in investigation cost up to Rs55,000.

All the official holidays will remain cancelled and the policemen will be on duty during Eidul Azha. It was also decided that the search operations against suspected elements would continue on daily basis till the last day of the Eid.
