LAHORE-Young Asfandyar is the outright leader with a round of net 67, five under par at the end of the first round of the three-round 33rd Millat Tractors Governors Cup Golf Tournament here at the par 72 Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course on Friday.

Asfandyar, Wazir Ali and Tariq Abbas Qureshi showed enough determination and steely resolution in their competitive approach to emerge as the top three performers in this prestigious golf event. Wazir and Tariq were bracketed at a score of net 70, two under par while Sikandar Mustafa of Millat Tractors was in touch and also was Ahsam Imran to offer a word of encouragement to the leading performers.

Out of the remaining 72 aspirants taking part in the competition, those who came safely through the first 18 holes, besides the top three leaders, were Ahmed Baig (Lahore Garrison), Najam Hafeez (Gymkhana) and Asad Abbas (Gymkhana), who played with a consistent touch to produce similar score of net 71. Behind them were Raza Saeed and Jehanzeb Saleh who were placed at a score of net 72 while Mohsen Zafar, Ahmed Zafar Hayat, Salman Jehangir and Tanwir Najam Butt were placed at the score of net 73.

Gymkhana Golf Club captain Sardar Murad and Convenor Golf Agha Ali Imam hoped that the leading contenders of the first day would continue the champion like approach and tackle the demands of this razor sharp competition like established champions.

Leader of first day Asfandyar said: “I am extremely happy about the way I hit the tee shots. They were all accurate and the distance was in the 280 yard plus range. And the consoling thing was that I got a pat on the back from my father. That’s really made my day.”

Gross section leader was Wazir Ali with gross score 72 followed by Ahmed Baig at 73 and Mohsen Zafar at 76. The tee off on Saturday will be at 8:30 am for men amateurs and 12:45 pm for ladies.
