Party elections

PML(N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif has said that the process of party restructuring and reorganisation would be over by September, with the conduct of elections for central and provincial offices. Though the 18th Amendment means that party elections are no longer mandatory for parties to register, and thus award tickets for legislatures, but the PML(N) is going ahead with the polls because it has a long-established tradition of such elections, and because the party chief does not see his position as being challenged. As is traditional, the PML(N) combines the process of reorganisation with elections, with the process of elections only coming after all basic units have enrolled members. Mian Nawaz made his remarks after a meeting on Friday with party workers and leaders, to discuss party organisational matters. He also said that similar high-level committees would be set up at the provincial level, and their meetings would be convened in the next few days in the respective provinces. The PML(N) has such a tradition, but the ruling PPP has not, and it only held party elections so that it could be eligible to contest the last elections. Now that it has passed the 18th Amendment, the PPP will not have to bother with something that is not part of the partys culture. However, the real interest in the PML(N) election is whether Mian Nawaz will be interested in resuming the presidency of the party, which he gave to younger brother Shahbaz to make the party eligible to award tickets at the last election. He became the partys Quaid, a newly created office, which he has used to hold party meetings over all issues. However, while Mian Nawaz promised all those workers who had rendered sacrifices for the party during the Tehrike-i-Nijat that they would be rewarded, this would have to be determined by their colleagues who would now have to vote for them, if they are to be rewarded. That is the purpose of internal party elections, that party workers find themselves evaluated by their peers.
