Addressing an Aman Ki Asha program, former Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri is reported to have boasted that Musharraf government had reached close to a settlement with India on Kashmir but the lawyers movement scuttled the progress. In this rambling bluster, Mr Kasuri has said nothing which was not already said before. Surprisingly, he keeps according credit to himself and the military ruler he served despite knowing fully well that his master had actually fatally reversed the peace process through his Kargil misadventure and then messed up the talks in Agra. Mr Kasuri cannot promote Aman Ki Asha by distorting yesterdays history. Having no new ideas to bring him back from ignominy he is in, he should resist the temptation to score brownie points on unsubstantiated claims whose veracity cannot be verified. Kashmir is too complicated an issue to be solved by delusional, self-indulgent statements of nincompoops. Mr Kasuris fact-twisting statement is, at best, joke of the year. -B. A.
