FIA formally arrests Musharraf in Benazir murder case

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has formally arrested Pervez Musharraf in the Benazir Bhutto murder case in Islamabad on Thursday.
Musharraf will remain at his Chak Shahzad farmhouse residence but will be produced at the anti-terrorist court in Rawalpindi on Friday.
Earlier, the Anti Terrorism Court had allowed the FIA to include Pervez Musharraf in the investigation of the Benazir Bhutto murder case.
The ATC has also allowed the FIA to arrest the former president if deemed necessary.
While talking to the media, the prosecutor general FIA Chaudhry Zulfiqar said that Musharraf would be included in the investigation through his remand.
Pervez Musharraf’s counsel Afshan Adil said that he has not been given an opportunity to prepare the case regarding additional sections of different acts.
Since his return to Pakistan in a bid to contest the 2013 general election, Pervez Musharraf has been embroiled in a number of cases against him, ranging from judges’ detention to Benazir’s assassination to treason against the state.
Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007 while Musharraf was president of the country.
She was killed after addressing an election campaign rally in the city. The ATC had indicted Musharraf in the case in February 2011, and in August the same year he was declared a proclaimed offender and his property was attached because of his absence.
