RAWALPINDI - Giving a massive jolt to Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) in the city, a diehard and veteran politician and former federal minister Raja Shahid Zafar along with other three heavyweight Jiyalas joined PML-N after meeting with Nawaz League’s senior leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

These Jiyalas included former PPP candidate for PP-9 Syed Jaffar Hussain Shah, the younger brother of Syed Zakir Hussain Shah, Chaudhry Masood Advocate the aspirants for PP-10 ticket, and Chaudhry Waris, a former candidate for PP-9.

However, the N League will formally announce their joining at a public gathering scheduled to be held in Murree on April 28 and addressed by Nawaz Sharif.

Insiders revealed to The Nation that some PPP leaders including Chairman Senate Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, Zumard Khan, Babu Idrees and Sardar Saleem utilized their all powers to bar Shahid from changing his loyalty; however, they could not succeed.

Raja Shahid Zafar, talking to this scribe on phone, confirmed this development saying Ch Nisar Ali Khan had visited his residence Wednesday in this regard. He linked this switchover to the persistent discrimination of the party with them.

“I cannot be part of party at the time when they are begging vote from people with its bad performance,” he added.

Hitting PPPP Parliamentary Committee very hard, Zafar was of view that loyal and diehard jiyallas were ignored and party tickets were awarded to those who always abused Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Raja Shahid Zafar took charge as the fourth Chief Executive of Al-Zafar Pvt Limited in 1974. During the 1970’s a young Raja Shahid Zafar earned his reputation as a keen businessman and political leader.

He is the man considered responsible for the current monumental success of Al-Zafar Pvt Limited. He remained the Secretary Students Union Gordon College (1966-67) at the age of 17 and later held the position of President Students Union Gordon College (1970-71).

He completed his Masters in English in 1971 from Gordon College, Rawalpindi. And at the same time played a major role in the establishment of the PPP, to the extent that majority of the PPP youth meetings for Punjab Chapter addressed by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto were held at his residence (Now Hotel Maharaja).

Raja Shahid Zafar was elected Member District Council Rawalpindi (1979-83 and 1983-87). In 1985 he was elected Member National Assembly of Pakistan and did not join the Official Muslim League and thus remained in opposition of 20 members out of the house of 237 Members of National Assembly.

He was re-elected MNA on PPP ticket in 1988 and appointed federal minister for production (1988-90).
