Cooking competitions and classes at COTHM conclude

LAHORE (PR): Two-week long Australia Day in Spring 2015 and Empower a Woman, Empower a Nation (EWEN) celebrations concluded Friday at the Lahore Campus of College of Tourism & Hotel Management (COTHM), Pakistan.

The two-week long series of activities comprised several cooking classes and cooking competitions, which were held in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi as a joint collaboration of College of Tourism & Hotel Management (COTHM), Pakistan, Chefs’ Association of Pakistan (CAP), the Australian High Commission in Pakistan and EWEN.

Chef Faiza Rehman, MasterChef Australia Contestant 2013, judged the cooking competitions and conducted cooking classes in the three cities. Ms Rehman was in Pakistan on a special invitation of the organizers to judge the cooking competitions and hold Master Cooking Classes in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi.

The event was inaugurated by chief guest Peter Heyward, Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan in Lahore recently. He graced the occasion along with his wife, Mrs. Susan Heyward. Other revered guests were Ms Ayesha Bux, Honorary Investment Consul for Melbourne, Australian Centre of Excellence, PakBoi, Ms Shaista Pervez Malik and Ms. Ashba Kamran. The event was attended by a large number of chefs, culinary students, celebrities, hospitality industry professionals and other noted guests.

Five female Member of the Punjab Assembly (MPAs) namely, Mrs. Rahila Khadim Hussain, Mrs. Farzana Butt, Mrs. Parveen Akhtar Maneka, Ms. Azma Bukhari and Ms. Nighat Nasir Sheikh graved the event with their presence on the concluding day.

They participated in a cook-off between the female MPAs and the WorkingWomen. They competed with the WorkingWomen at COTHM’s Studio Kitchen, Lahore Campus.

Mr. Ahmad Shafiq, COTHM CEO, Mr. Zaheer Ahmed, Director Operations COTHM and Mr. Waqar Iliyas Khan, Vice President of Chefs’ Association of Pakistan (CAP) ensured the successful implementation and completion of the two-week long event.

The purpose of this grand event was to celebrate the longstanding friendship between Australia-Pakistan, along with promoting gender equality, women empowerment and emancipation in Pakistan.

Hascol Petroleum acquires twenty new retail outlets

KARACHI (PR): Hascol Petroleum Limited has entered into an agreement with Motorway Operations and Rehabilitation Engineering (Private) Limited, a subsidiary of FWO, to take legal possession of twenty retail outlets located at Lahore-Islamabad Motorway.

These retail outlets were previously managed by another oil marketing company. The term of the agreement is for a period of twenty years, and all these retail outlets will be Company operated under the brand name of ‘HASCOL’. The retail outlets will be upgraded to International Standards and will be equipped with state of the art equipment and facilities.

With the addition of these outlets, HASCOL brand will get a tremendous boost in Central Punjab and will have a positive impact on the sales volume and profitability of the Company.

Nestlé posts positive results

KARACHI (PR): Nestlé Pakistan boosted its overall earnings by 76.7% for the three months ended on March 31, 2015. The results were announced at the conclusion of the meeting of Nestlé Pakistan’s Board of Directors.

After an impressive display of a strong financial performance in the last quarter of 2014, Nestlé Pakistan, the Pakistani subsidiary of the world’s largest food and beverage company, has again posted encouraging results for the first quarter of 2015.  Despite the prevalent socio-political situation of the country, Nestle Pakistan has witnessed an overall increase in its total revenues by almost Rs 1.3 billion.

Additionally, its earnings have increased from Rs 45.83 per share in 2014 during the same period to Rs 81.01 per share in 2015. In the area of sales, the revenue of Nestlé Pakistan stood at Rs 25 billion, 5.6% higher compared to the same period last year. Export sales during the same period stood at Rs 1.5 billion.

The company’s gross profit margin increased by 810 bps compared to last year, mainly due to extended cool weather positively impacting milk flush and relatively stable fresh milk prices. Nestlé Pakistan’s net profit (after taxes) reached Rs 3.6 billion, translating into 76.7% growth vs. the same period last year.

Based on these figures for the beginning of 2015, the company shares the positive outlook with Pakistan’s national economy based on sustainable growth and demand for its products.

Footwear industry courses

LAHORE (PR): In order to provide skilled manpower for footwear industry, TEVTA will offer courses relevant to this industry. At present, TEVTA is offering different demand driven courses in its Govt Institute of Leather Technology at Gujranwala which includes 3 years DAE in Leather Technology and one year Leather Manufacturing and Shoe Designing & Modeling course.

Chairperson TEVTA Irfan Qaiser Sheikh was addressing the 4 members delegation of the Pakistan Footwear Manufacturers Association (PFMA), led by Mian Muhammad Afzal, here yesterday at TEVTA Secretariat.

Office bearers of Footwear Manufacturers Association Mansoor Ehsan Shaikh, Abid Hafeez, Javaid Siddiqui, TEVTA Officers Azhar Iqbal Shad, Akhtar Abbas Bharwana, Ayesha Qazi, Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Waheed Akhtar were also present on this occasion.

Irfan Qaiser Shaikh that TEVTA has developed curriculum for different short courses as demanded by the Footwear Industry like Grading of Shoe Component and Pattern Making. Training need assessment has been conducted to introduce DAE in Footwear Technology. These courses are yet to be launched in Govt. Institute of Leather Technology Gujranwala after getting consultation from footwear industry. Collaboration of TEVTA with Pakistan Footwear Manufacturers Association will meet the lacking of trained manpower in this sector and will establish fruitful impact on both organizations.

Mian Muhammad Afzal in his address said that Footwear Industry is a labour intensive employing directly and indirectly nearly half a million people. This industry is converting Pakistan Leather into high value finished shoes and exporting to countries around the world. We are making major investment in capacity expansion to make full use of the GSP plus status that has been provided to Pakistan. But our industry lacks technical hands and supervisory staff, essential to meet the challenges of international market. TEVTA collaboration will help us to overcome this manpower gap.

VU signs MoU with PIM

LAHORE (PR): Virtual University of Pakistan (VU) and Pakistan Institute of Management (PIM), Ministry of Industries & Production Pakistan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enable mutual co-operation between the two institutes for capacity building and training programs. The MoU was signed by Dr Naveed A Malik, Rector Virtual University of Pakistan, and MuhammadAbid Hussain, Director Pakistan Institute of Management, Karachi.

As a result of this collaboration both organizations will develop academic and educational cooperation through technological infrastructure and resource sharing. Both organizations will establish formal relationship specifically designed to promote the management skills through training sessions, consultancy and research across the country.

Dr NaveedA Malik said that this collaboration would increase the outreach and will serve as an endeavor to offer dynamic routes of achievement to our brilliant youth. Mr. Abid Hussain, while expressing his views said that Pakistan Institute of Management (PIM) is the pioneer of executive development in Pakistan and specializes in the training and development of industrial sector. He further highlighted its primary mission is to serve the growing and complex needs of organizational managers through training.
