A story has it that the managing committee of the country's most posh and exclusive club recently sat down to declare eligible 30 new members out of a 100 whose applications had matured. Well the 30 that got invited were jubilant but among the rejects were quite a few pillars of Karachi high society who probably considered membership of this premier club their very birthright. Ticked off and out was the President of a multinational bank. Consolation: Once a Sindh Club gatekeeper refused entry to a sitting PM Khwaja Nazimuddin because the latter had not the appearance of an Englishman. Khwaja Sahib had been invited by the British High Commissioner but being a modest man returned home and informed his host who intervened and rearranged his entry. It is not known whether Khwaja Sahib ever applied for membership to the club but if he had it would not have been smooth sailing. Back to the present, another person who failed to secure the required six tick marks is the son-in law of former CM Sindh, Mustafa Jatoi. Now he would feel much better if he knew the story of his father-in-law's struggle to get in. Then of course there is the honourable judge of Sindh High Court who was judged unfit or lesser than some. Watch out, you could end up with a class action suit here. * * * * * * * * * It seems that sleepy Dunga Gali in the Galliat Area is coming alive with land ownership litigation. Rumour has it that the Gali is buzzing with law suits among seasonal settlers mostly from Lahore. Many have bought land here hoping to make a summer retreat only to find that someone else is claiming ownership of at least part of it. It is said that the son of Punjab CM has bought the largest plot but as luck would have it his neighbour is building vertically and obstructing the panoramic view he had dreamed off. Yet another stay order, they say, has livened up the local gossip. * * * * * * * * * Apparently the absconding former President of the Bank of Punjab, Hamesh Khan, has resurfaced in the US and here he intends to stay according to insiders. How he managed to negotiate his way past an ECL and acquire a US visa, remains an unresolved mystery. But we hear he had help, among others, from a powerful minister from Gujrat and an influential Chaudhry from Rahimyar Khan with Emirates connections.
