The gruesome footages of lynching of two brothers in Sialkot has shocked Pakistanis all over the world. Vigilante justice by a mob in the presence of a high-ranking District Police Officer (DPO) and eight other policemen that stuck out like eyesores in a considerable number of common citizens may well be the worst depiction of our humanity as a people. At a time when the nation is consumed by grief on destruction of flood, this brutal murder in a crowd in broad daylight has the people struck dumb with horror and revulsion. A uniformed policeman is considered a guarantee of life, property and honour of citizens the world over but in Pakistan, police is a synonym of terror, torture and corruption. The role of police as silent accomplices in the Sialkot incident is a mark of ignominy on the face of this department. All civilians and police officers that are seen in the footage of this inhuman incident should be punished. -ZAHID RASHID, Azad Kashmir, August 21.
