KARACHI – An angry mob attacked a senior doctor and other health professionals at Civil Hospital Karachi on Friday morning, while they were performing their duties there. Associate Professor of Surgery Dr Umair-ul-Islam and OT Technician Muhammad Akram were busy saving the life of an injured patient when angry mob attacked them on their alleged failure in saving the life of the patient. The inhuman act of the angry mob forced the health professionals to stop work at the Civil Hospital for recording a protest. The protest caused postponement of more than 100 surgeries and OPDs. The protesting doctors and the other staff demanded of the government to provide appropriate security to doctors and staff at the public and private hospitals in the metropolis.On the other hand, Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed while taking notice of the incident condemned manhandling of health professionals at the civil hospital, and asked the authorities concerned to take stern action against the culprits. He ordered to provide proper security to doctors and their staff at the hospitals. The health minister contacted higher ups of law-enforcement agencies to further increase the contingents of police and Rangers in and around the civil hospital. Meanwhile, Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Karachi President Dr M Idrees Adhi said that this is indeed painful and distressing to know the mob attack on the health professionals while they were performing their duties at Civil Hospital Karachi.“In this ugly incident Dr Umair-ul-Islam and Muhammad Akram were attacked by the mob after unavoidable death of their relative. The incident has resulted in grievous injuries to both health professionals.” “We demand immediate arrest of the culprits and concrete security measures for all health centres of Pakistan in general and Karachi in particular,” he said. Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) condemned the brutal attack on the doctor and a technician.
