LAHORE – A 55-year old woman attempted suicide by jumping into River Ravi from Old Bridge in the Shahdara Town area, police said on Friday.
The reason behind the woman’s act is said to be the attitude of her daughters. “The woman’s daughters used to admonish her over petty household matters,” a neighbour told this scribe on condition of anonymity. He further said the woman Shakeela Bibi, a resident of street No 8 in Qaisar Town, Shahdara, was humiliated by her daughters, who even thrashed her.
On the day of the incident, Shakeela Bibi jumped into River Ravi after being distressed by her daughters, but fortunately two rescuers Muhammad Hanif and Basharat saw her. “They immediately dived into the water and rescued her alive,” Rescue 1122 spokesman Faheem Jehanzaib told reporters.
He said Shakeela Bibi was provided first aid by the servicemen and handed over to the police. Police maintained that no case was registered against anyone. “We will proceed in accordance with law in case the woman asks to register case, but legally she can also be accused of attempting suicide,” the on-duty police officer said.
