LAHORE – The Government College University Debating Society (GCUDS) has retained its position as the best debating forum in Pakistan by bagging 131 oratory awards in 57 national and international debating competitions during the academic year 2011-12.

This was stated by GCUDS Patron and Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khaleequr Rahman in the annual report of the society published on Friday. According to the report, the GCUDS was crowned as the Best University of Pakistan at the Higher Education Commission’s Allama Iqbal Annual Speech Contest.

The 131 oratory awards won by the GCUDS include 34 team trophies, 35 best speaker awards, 25 second best-speaker, 32 third-best speaker awards and five consolation prizes.

The GCUDS lifted coveted trophies at LUMS, Kinnaird College Lahore, Army Burn Hall College Abbottabad, Atchison College Lahore, FAST, Punjab University, FCC University Lahore, Allama Iqbal Medical College University Lahore, Multan Law College, Beaconhouse, City School, Sadiq Public School Bahawalpur, Cadet College Petaro, UVAS Lahore, Fatima Jinnah Medical College Lahore, Punjab Medical College Faisalabad, Government College Toba Tek Singh and Govt College Bhakhar.

GCUDS General Secretary Saadul Hassan was declared as the best GCU debater with overall 17 individual oratory awards, while Zahid Ali, a student of BA (Hons) Persian, stood second with 10 national awards to his credit.

The GCUDS also set an unprecedented record of wining 17 positions at the Chief Minister Punjab Speech Contest 2011. Talking about the year-long performance of Ravian orators, Vice Chancellor Dr Rahman said GCU orators had proved themselves to be the most outstanding torchbearers of the university pride.

“They are the future architects of Pakistan who will steer our flagship to shores of prosperity,” he maintained. Dr Rahman said he had doubled the funds for co-curricular activities since these activities hone the collective outlook of the youth. He expected of the GCU orators to further enhance their efforts to maintain and improve their existing record.
