Citizens have right to kill robbers in danger: CCPO

LAHORE - Capital City Police Chief Pervez Rathore has said the citizens have the right to kill the robbers in case they find their (citizens) lives in danger. He said this while taking to the media men here on Wednesday. The CCPO gave cash prize Rs5,000 to a citizen, Umer Basharat, for challenging a robber who intercepted him on Monhi Road and opened firing on him during street crime. The CCPO also awarded him a special shield on the behalf of police department for showing courage to foil nefarious designs of the robbers in broad daylight despite the fact that he was empty-handed. Taking to The Nation, the CCPO said under law every body has a right to safe his life and if any citizen feels that his life is in danger he could use all available resources for his protection. People have been given this right by the state, he said, adding that merciless robbers do not deserve any leniency. Commenting on the statement of the CCPO, Ghulam Mustafa Chaudhry advocate, a senior lawyer of the Lahore High Court said that our constitution provides right to its citizen to save his life in case he feels that his rival was going to kill him. The section 100 and 103 of PPC, Chaudhry Ghulam Mustafa said, provide this right to a citizen. The gangsters, he said, who are taking lives of the citizens and depriving them of their properties should be taken to task.
