Islamabad - Inspector General NH&MP, Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema, Wednesday said that prestigious and trustworthy department like Motorway Police should be authorised to issue driving licences all over the country within the next few years.

While talking to the participants of inauguration ceremony of “Safe Driving Training Institute” here, he said safe driving mainly depends upon the skills of the driver along with quality of vehicles and condition of the road. Keeping in view the importance of safe driving, motorway police have launched “Safe Driving Training Institute” at par with international standards. The institute has incorporated unique style of training with latest technology and IG NH&MP, Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema inaugurated the “Safe Driving Training Institute”, at NH&MP lines headquarters, Islamabad.

SSP Sikandar Hayat gave briefing to the participants of the ceremony. “It is the only institute of its kind where driving training will be imparted through simulator,” he said. The SSP numerated various benefits of the use of driving simulators and told the participants of the ceremony that the first benefit of a driving simulator was that trainees could be exposed to different driving conditions in a realistic, virtual environment that would be far too hazardous to practice in real life. “Driving simulator software may allow you to design your own scenario,” he added. The most important benefit of simulator is that everything each student does behind the wheel during a session is recorded. The entire incident can be replayed from multi-angles for analysis and discussion if required, he added.

The ceremony was attended by senior bureaucrats, diplomats, senior police officers, members of civil society and media representatives who were of the view that Safe Driving Training Institute would be another feather in the NH&MP cap. The participants said that under the supervision of qualified instructors and with the help of driving simulator, specialist and well-trained drivers would be on wheels. It would be an imperative milestone towards making highways safer, they added.
