Our government thinks kite-flying is deadly because it causes deaths of children. I find it rather surprising that this concern took so many years coming and nobody seems concerned about the deaths caused by accidents on the road. The fact is that mullahs do not like kite-flying because they think it is an Indian festival. The government is banning this popular sport because the mullahs want it. There is a fear in government that if it does not act to stop the Basant festival, the gangsters of religious parties would and the government would be portrayed as weak and ineffective. -ZAFAR ISRAR, Karachi, February 23.
