The law and order situation is getting serious in the interior Sindh. Hardly a day passes by peacefully here with Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Qamber, Kashmore, Khairpur, Ghotki and Dadu districts having serious law and order situations every now and then. Almost every other day, we hear of somebody being kidnapped for ransom. Although all such cases are reported in the media, no serious efforts are being made to control the situation. Wealthy communities of the districts, i.e. Hindus, Sheikhs, Memons, (majority of them big businessmen), have become the prime target of kidnappers. This situation has created a great sense of insecurity and restlessness among these communities which are valuable assets of Sindh because of their business skills. It is a well-known fact that without the help of patharidars (locally influential feudals who support kidnappers) such incidents cannot take place. An operation against patharidars, therefore, is very important for controlling the menace of kidnapping for ransom in the interior Sindh. The police has to play a role in apprehending such elements but that is conditional to the influential political leadership of the affected districts extending a helping hand to the local administration. Every effort must be made by authorities concerned to protect the lives and property of the business elite of affluent communities living in the heartland of Sindh. -ABDUL SAMAD SAMO, Karachi, February 23.
