ISLAMABAD - Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Khalid Shameem Wynne and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lt-Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha separately called on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Friday and discussed the overall regional security with specific reference to the country’s internal security situation. Wynne discussed the professional preparedness of the armed forces to deal with both internal and external threats. Sources aware of the deliberations of the meeting say the prime minister said the defence needs of the military would be met.

During the meeting with Lt-Gen Pasha, who is going to retire next month, the matters pertaining to the overall security situation of the country came under discussion with specific reference to the role of ISI in countering the covert attempts to destabilise the country came under sharp focus.

Sources further said the ISI DG gave a detailed briefing on the involvement of elements, having support from some neighbouring states, in the Balochistan unrest.

Sources further said the standoff with the United States over the Nato supplies, which were suspended soon after the attack on the border checkposts in Mohmand Agency, also figured in the meeting, while the situation in Afghanistan also came under discussion.

Secretary Foreign Affairs Salman Bashir was also present in the meeting.

Monitoring Desk adds: According to a private TV channel, Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is expected to meet President Asif Ali Zardari in Karachi.
