LAHORE –  Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the Government will establish modern transport system in all major cities of the province. The CM has also directed the department concerned to immediately contact authorities in the Federal Government to obtain uninterrupted gas supply for the CNG buses in the city.

He said government is implementing a comprehensive programme for the provision of modern, comfortable and affordable transport facilities to the masses that has been introduced in the provincial metropolis and the scope of it will soon be extended to other big cities. The CM said that work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System is underway and Turk experts are reaching the city soon to carry forward the project.

The CM said this while presiding over a meeting held to review the pace of implementation of Bus Rapid Transit System project and provision of transport facilities to the people at Chief Minister’s Secretariat, here Tuesday. Provincial Minsiter for Transport Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, Chairman Lahore Transport Company Kh. Ahmad Hassaan, MPA Mehr Ishtiaq Ahmad, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretary Finance and Secretary Transport were present.

The CM said the government has fulfilled promise by providing modern buses to the people of Lahore and another 575 buses are being put in the transport system of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and Bahawalpur. He directed that LC should immediately be opened for these buses so that buses could be plied in accordance with the schedule. He further directed that Lahore Transport Company should take prompt measures for the provision of modern transport facilities to the people as early as possible and the best operators should be selected for this purpose. He said that uninterrupted supply of CNG is of vital importance for the smooth operation of public transport and federal government should immediately be contacted for this purpose. He said that Punjab government should also consider setting up its own CNG stations to ensure supply of gas to the public transport. He said CNG stations of City District Government can be allocated for this purpose initially.  He said that the Turk experts will soon be called to carry out the BRT project so that work could start on this project under their supervision. He said the expertise of the Turks will also be used to train the local engineers for the implementation of the project. He said that Lahore Transport Company should take steps for its capacity building for the speedy implementation of various projects.  Earlier, Chairman Lahore Transport Company Kh. Ahmad Hassaan in his briefing informed that Federal Petroleum Minister is coming to Lahore within a day or two and negotiations will be held with him for uninterrupted supply of CNG to public transport.
