At least six persons including five of a same family - a couple and their two sons - were killed and more than 42 others sustained injuries in separate fog related incidents in different areas of Punjab here on Sunday.
According to details, a passenger van collided with a pick-up van in Qasarpura Wah Multan due to dense fog. Resultantly, seven were injured. The injured were immediately taken to Nishtar Hospital where their condition is stated to be stable.
In Muzaffargarh, five members of a same family were crushed to death when a speeding trailer rammed into two motorcycles.
The dead included a couple, their two children and sister of the man. The accident occurred near Noor Kubra, 10 km from Muzaffargarh early Sunday morning.
The family members were going to Dera Ghazi Khan on motorcycles. When they reached near Noor Kubra, a speeding trailer hit the bikes due to fog. As a result, a man identified as Sonara Khan, his wife Rukhsana Bibi, sister Naseem Bibi and two sons - Ahmed and Ahsan were killed on the spot.
On information, DSP Irfan Butt and rescue teams reached on the spot and shifted the dead bodies to hospital. The police have registered a case against the trailer driver and impounded the vehicle.
In Hafizabad, a woman was killed and more than 22 passengers were injured in two separate fog-related road accidents on Hafizabad-Pindi Bhattian Road on Sunday.
According to rescue 1122 sources, a passenger coach was on the way to Sialkot from Chiniot. When it reached near village Sandhwan Tarar on Hafizabad-Pindi Bhattian Road, a speeding trailer (LES-6300) coming from the opposite direction, collided with a coach. Resultantly, 18 passengers including seven women were injured. Rescue 1122 shifted the injured, belonging to Sialkot, Pasrur and Chiniot to hospitals.
Three of the injured were reported in critical condition. Drivers of both the vehicles fled away after accident. The second accident was occurred near Pindi Bhattian Motorway Interchange when a Truck (RIR-1196) hit a carry van coming from Faisalabad. As a result a woman Raqia Bibi died on the spot while four others received serious injuries. The injured were shifted to THQ Hospital Pindi Bhattian. The fog has not only disrupted the daily routine but has also increased road mishaps.
On the other hand, thick blanket of fog has once again descended over Punjab which wreaked havoc with flight operations and severely reduced visibility. Flights were delayed and schedules disrupted while visibility has reduced considerably on Motorway, GT Road and National Highway.
Sahiwal, Khanewal, Multan, Lodhran and Bahawalpur have been blanketed by dense fog.
Meanwhile, fog also reduced visibility to just a maximum of 25-50 meters at Motorway M-3 from Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad and at M-4 from Faisalabad to Gojra.
Maximum visibility at GT road from Kharian to Peshawar was just at 20-50 meters.Motorway spokesperson has issued a warning, saying motorists must use fog lights and keep a considerable distance from other vehicles while driving in the extreme weather conditions. National Highway and Motorway authorities have also advised drivers to avoid speeding.
