LAHORE-PML-N MPA Shumaila Rana finally resigned from her Punjab Assembly seat, on Friday, succumbing to constant party pressure, after she had failed to prove her innocence in credit card theft case before an inquiry committee constituted by top party leadership to look into the allegations against her. Elected on a women special seat on PML-N ticket, Shumaila presented her resignation to party leadership, but only after she had secured interim pre-arrest bail from the court. The drop scene of Shumaila Rana case came when party leadership threatened to revoke her basic party membership if she did not resign on Friday. She tendered her resignation to Speaker Punjab Assembly, copies of which had also been sent to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other senior party leaders. Though party sources confirmed her resignation, the Assembly Secretariat had not yet received it till filing of this report by 10pm. She was found allegedly involved in stealing credit cards of UBL and Bank Alfalah from bag of a woman at a local health club, and doing 'illegal shopping of Rs 80,000 on July 11 using the stolen cards. After police registered a theft case against Shumaila, PML-N leadership asked her to resign as MPA, but she showed reluctance and sought two-day time to prove her innocence. She, however, was made to resign 14 days after the incident. Earlier, senior party leaders had called Shumaila Rana at CM Secretariat on last Wednesday to clarify her position before the party regarding the allegations levelled against her. The inquiry committee constituted by the party asked her repeatedly to present the evidences that could prove her innocence. But instead of presenting sound proofs, she kept on insisting that she was not involved in the case. 'The only argument Shumaila could present in her defence was that 'I had given the 'pool money to my close friend, Sonia, who used it without my consent. When I demanded the money back, Sonia provided me the credit cards, saying that in lieu of money I could use her credit cards, the sources revealed. The sources further said when the inquiry committee disclosed that the credit cards belonged to Zara Malik and not to Sonia as per her claim, Shumaila replied that Zara Malik was sister of Sonia. However, she failed to prove it true during further cross-questioning, the sources maintained. Having listened to all her arguments, the sources said, the party demanded her to produce Sonia before the inquiry committee, police and media to save her from further disgrace, but she refused to do so. The sources revealed that PML-N Punjab women wing deputy secretary general Anjum Rana, mother of Shumaila Rana made her last ditch efforts to bail her daughter out. She contacted a number of influential party leaders to play their role in the case. She demanded that if her daughter (Shumaila Rana) had to resign from provincial assembly, her membership in the party should remain intact. It may be recalled that Shumaila Rana is member of the Standing Committee on Religious Affairs and Auqaf. Moreover, she is also member of Chief Ministers Coordination Committee for the Internally Displaced Persons, which is an offshoot of Punjab Chief Ministers Fund for the IDPs of NWFP. Unmarried Shumaila Rana is daughter of Hidayat Ali, and she climbed the ladder of becoming an MPA by virtue of her mother Anjum Aras services to the party, as the latter had been worker of the party for about two decades. Anjum Rana, a retired schoolteacher of a private institute, was not a graduate, and after her successful canvassing for her daughter, a reserved seat was given to Shumaila Rana, who is said to be in her mid-twenties. She is the first MPA from this family, and has nothing tangible to her credit for which she should had been given the slot.
