Darul Uloom VC removed

DEOBAND (INP) - The Vice-Chancellor of Darul Uloom, Maulana Ghulam Muhammad Vastanvi, was removed from his post here Sunday. Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani, who was appointed as acting vice-chancellor, will be the new head of the institution. Maulana Vastanvi had triggered a controversy soon after his appointment with his remarks praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modis rule and his development policy. He was reported as saying: Muslims should forget the communal riots of 2002 and move on and that the community did not face discrimination in Gujarat. Maulana Vastanvi has been removed from the post of Vice Chancellor by Majlis-i-Shura, Maulana Nomani said. He said while nine members of the committee voted in favour of his removal, four others voted against the move. The Majlis-i-Shura or the governing council of the seminary met on Saturday and discussed various issues. The report of the three-member inquiry committee, which was constituted in February to look into the allegations, was submitted at the meeting after which the voting took place. Vastanvi was elected as VC on January 10 following the death of Maulana Marghoobur Rahman. After the controversy erupted, the council, which held its emergency meeting here on February 23, appointed the committee to look into allegations against Maulana Vastanvi and all other issues concerning both inside and outside the seminary.
