QUETTA – Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday shot and injured Deputy Director Schools Syed Abrar Hussain at Shawakshah Road of Quetta, while one of the assailants was killed in the retaliatory fire.

Banned religious outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for attacking Syed Abrar Hussain. According to police, Abrar, hailing from the Hazara community of Shia Muslims, was heading towards his office, Education Directorate located at Shawakshah Road, when the attackers, who had already taken position, sprayed bullets at his vehicle. As a result, Abrar sustained serious wounds.

However, one assailant was killed in the retaliatory fire due to brisk action of his bodyguard.

Police moved Abrar to the Combined Military Hospital for treatment, where his condition is stated to be serious.

Quoting eyewitnesses, police said two assailants managed to flee from the scene after committing the crime, adding that preliminary investigation reports suggested they wanted to target the senior official of the education department.

“Two pistols and one mobile phone were recovered from the attacker, who was killed in retaliatory firing,” police said, adding that the body was shifted to Civil Hospital’s morgue; however, its identity was yet to be ascertained.

Police and personnel of Frontier Corps rushed to the site after the incident and cordoned off the area.

Police have registered a case against unidentified people and started investigation into the incident.
