The Young Doctors Association in Punjab seems to have developed a flair for staging protests. Yet once again, these doctors are on the roads blocking traffic through sit-ins and waving placards. The demand is the same old one; their salary is not enough. They argue that many of their colleagues are leaving the country for greener pastures abroad. The painful thing is that the strike has entered its sixth day. This is against their very profession’s oath to attend to the suffering humanity above all considerations and too long a period for strike by medical practitioners. It is a far cry from the conduct expected of the doctors who are supposed to be the embodiment of the noble profession.Patients from the marginalised section of the society who cannot afford exorbitant fees at private clinics and need immediate treatment have been the worst hit. The manner in which the demands are being made is unethical since they come at the cost of precious lives. Most importantly, the young doctors had had a substantial salary raise about a year ago after long drawn negotiations with the provincial setup. They have a point that they are finding it hard to make ends meet but so is everyone else going through the same ordeal.
