This letter is the least I can do to show my gratitude towards an institution as great as Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital, a symbol of true sincerity and humanity in our country. My father, Abdul Salam, Patient Number 48237 was initially treated at SKMH some 3 years back. The chemo and radiation successfully cured his throat cancer. The treatment and response by doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, practically everyone out there was so supportive that next time he was diagnosed with lung cancer, he insisted on showing himself at SKMH even if that meant moving from Karachi to Lahore. This time the severity of the disease was so intense that he had to be taken to emergency every now and then, and often had to be admitted for days. The only thing that kept him going for six months was the grace of God and support of the SKMH team. The hospital's standard and technology can be compared with any high quality local and international hospital. There is no discrimination between the self-financing patient and the patient relying on donations. Everyone kept at their work of life saving, serving my father until he breathed his last in the hospital premises on 29th of December 2008. I am sure there must be other institutions that are funded by donations in our country that must also be striving to achieve the same standard. The only thing we as a nation can do is to support them and provide them with as much help as we can rather than criticizing them. I sincerely pray for all the contributors of the SKMH. -SYRA SALAM, Jeddah, March 24.
