LAHORE - Below normal rainfall in winter and persistent dry spell has caused early setting of summer throughout the country, quite unusual weather conditions in March. Both maximum and minimum temperature is 5-7 degree Celsius above normal level in various parts of the country including Lahore. Various cities have so far experienced such heat that broke decades old record of high temperature during March. In Lahore, the mercury touched 37 C mark on March 21, breaking 38 year old record of high temperature during March. On March 29, 1972, maximum temperature in the City was recorded 36.1 C. In other cities of the province including Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Multan and Sialkot, decade old records of high temperature in March were also broken. The situation in the federal capital, Northern Areas, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and other provinces is the same where unusual rise in the mercury level is witnessed during spring. In Islamabad, the temperature reached 34.6 C on March 19, breaking 33 year old record of high temperature during March. In Gupis (NA), Kotli (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir), D I Khan, Balakot, Kakul, Saidu Sharif, Chitral, Parachinar, Hyderabad, Karachi, Nawabshah, Padidan, Barkhan, Dalbadin, Kalat, Khuzdar, Nokkundi, Panjgur, Quetta, Sibbi, Zhob and various other cities, 11-39 year old records of high temperature in March were also broken. Less rain in winter and relatively dry March has caused maximum temperature to rise above normal level. These weather conditions are normally experienced in April, said meteorological expert Shaukat Ali Awan, adding, the minimum temperature was also above normal level that has also made nights warm. This is seasonal variation that can happen due to above or below normal rainfall in winter. As there is far less rainfall than the normal, the mercury level has started increasing early, Shaukat Ali Awan said, adding, the temperature would continue to increase as no significant rain giving system was approaching the country in the remaining days of March. On Wednesday, maximum and minimum temperature in the City was recorded 36.5 C and 20.5 C respectively. Relative humidity in the morning was recorded 64 percent, which decreased to 31 percent in the evening. According to the experts, continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country. Local meteorological department has forecast hot and dry weather for most parts of the country including the City during the next 24 hours.
