LAHORE - A grand slam hit by Umair Bhatti powered Pakistan to a convincing 18-0 win over Afghanistan in the 10th West-Asia Baseball Cup here at the Punjab Stadium on Saturday.
Pakistan made an explosive start getting six runs in the first innings as Arif Senior, Imtiaz Ali, Arshad Khan, M Asif and Iftikhar Ahmad all contributed one runs each, before Umair Bhatti earned the distinction of grand slam to give 6-0 lead to Pakistan .
In the second innings, Pakistan maintained their offensive game while Afghanistan were failing to cope with the fine pitching of Pakistani pitchers Hafiz Usman and Ihsanullah. Pakistan added five more runs through M Arslan, Imtiaz Ali, Arshad, Farooq Khan and Asif.
In the next innings, Pakistan collected five more runs one each through M Usman, Nasir Butt, Asif, Mussadiq Hanif and Imtiaz, who hit the home-run to increase the lead to 16-0. The Pakistani batters, after establishing a big lead, showed complacency as they added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Usman scored in the fourth innings, Asif made in the fifth innings to seal the fate of the match. Asif remained top scorer with four runs while Imtiaz contributed three runs for Pakistan . Cultural Attaché Embassy of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Zardasht Shams was the chief guest on the occasion. Sri Lanka will meet Iran today (Sunday) at 2pm. IOC member and Punjab Olympic Association president Syed Shahid Ali Shah will be chief guest while Iranian Consulate General M Hossain Bani Asadi will be guest of honour.
