Show compassion

A private TV channel reporter covering plight of the IDPs in a camp near Mardan in a belligerent mood demanded to know why some inmates had two or three mattresses while others had none. The commissioner, compassion personified, enlightened the reporter that these poor IDPs had lost every bit of their worldly possessions including their cattle and chattel. He asked the reporter if he could take the agony of spending only a night with out the comforts of home? These people entirely uncertain of their fate in the next moment had become a little restive and impatient. They did not queue up for their turn when a truck carrying relief supplies arrived and just grabbed whatever came their way. The reporter, still skeptical, demanded to know about the distribution of the dry rations and food. The commissioner again politely informed him that Mian Nawaz Sharif Sahib had donated 15 trucks of atta but when we wanted to distribute the flour bags, Mian Sahib told them that it would be done later by one of his (PML-N) ministers (probably in front of cameras). Oh, my Allah and His Prophet What was that about the left hand not knowing what the right hand gives in charity? When will we learn to serve the humanity in distress without grinding our selfish axe in the process? -COL (Retd) RIAZ JAFRI, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, May 12.
