Find another way

I personally feel that governments decision to block Facebook and hundreds of other websites is not good for Pakistans image in the world. The competition of drawing our Prophets sketches is intolerable for me, just as it must be to every Muslim of the world. I strongly condemn this act of blasphemy and urge the world to punish the evil characters responsible for hurting millions of Muslims around the world. But there has to be a better way of getting our protest on the matter recorded with the people of the world. It is human nature that restrictions make one more curious. Many people who were not even aware of the Facebook and YouTube before this issue have actually searched for these sites after the governments decision to clamp filters on them. The recent incident of Times Square failed bombing and the involvement of a Pakistani Faisal Shahzad had already badly damaged the name of Pakistan. Blocking these world famous websites at this point of time was not a wise act because it has further added to the negative image of Pakistan abroad. It is pertinent to mention here that none of the other Islamic countries blocked the sites. It is a sad fact that Pakistanis living in foreign countries usually introduce themselves as Indians or Bangladeshis these days because they are afraid of Pakistans bad image in the world. One of my relatives that lives in Europe requested me a couple of days ago not to send any parcels from Pakistan. He said he had introduced himself as an Indian there and anything arriving from Pakistan in his name might create a bad situation for him there. Blocking famous icons of the western civilization like Facebook and YouTube in these critical sites might cause considerable harm to these organisations may be in millions of dollars. But it is also doing irreparable damage to the image of Pakistan. We should protest at the outrage they have committed but change the way we do it. -ZAHID RASHID, Rawalpindi, May 23.
