According to Variety, someone recently bid $280,000 (approx. £180,000) to spend time with actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The evening of his company was auctioned off during the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS event at Cannes Film Festival, during which DiCaprio decided to stay seated at his table, where he ‘wore a ponytail and smoked an e-cigarette while drinking a glass of white wine.’

Other ‘items’ to be auctioned off on the night included an 18-foot-tall Jeff Koons sculpture, which ended up selling for $13 million, and a collection of dresses from Tom Ford and Eva Longoria, which raised $900,000. In total, the night collected $30 million for AIDS/HIV research. Is Leonardo DiCaprio sporting that eye-catching beard to divert attention away from his receding hairline? That’s what one of his security guards tells me.

‘The look isn’t to stop people recognising him – it’s to stop people realising that he’s going bald,’ the source told me at Leo’s annual ‘after-after’ bash following the amfAR party.

But Leo, pictured at the amfAR gala at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, isn’t letting it cramp his style. But on Thursday, Leo was in thick of it – and when police came to wind up the event, he screamed: ‘You can’t shut this down – it’s the best party ever!’ But officers were having none of it and closed it down anyway.
