Appeal

I have three kids; an 11-year old daughter Nida Shahid, 8-year-old Ahmad and 3-year old Eman Shahid. In 2005, one of my daughter was diagnosed with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. At that time she was 7 years old and her movement was normal. Later, though, she started to have motor difficulties and now can move with great difficulty if at all. She can't raise herself while sitting and has to be physically put in bed at night. The same problem has also beset my son. This disease usually strikes at the age of six or seven and the victim is handicapped by the age of 12. There is no cure in the world for this disease. Lately, they have done some gene therapy in Canada which has raised some hopes for sufferers of this disease but that would cost approximately 50,00,000 in Pak rupees. I am a white-collared person who is not given to begging for money in normal circumstances. And I feel shamed having to make this request but I have no source from where I could raise this sort of money. I pray to Allah for His mercy upon my children and blessing for those who help provide resources for their treatment. All the necessary medical reports are available. Professor Dr Bakshi of cardioligy at King Edward Medical College and Dr Amir Ikram from Doctors' Hospital can be contacted for details of the case. -SHAHID ZUBAIR, 576-L, Johar Town, Lahore.
